Life can get complicated sometimes, and it can be difficult to face all that it throws at us alone. No problem or dilemma is ‘too small’ for counselling. If, in one way or another, the problem causes upset and distress in a person’s life, then it is big enough.
Counselling or therapy is about the client meeting with a counsellor or therapist in order to talk about the problems or issues that are preventing the client from leading a happy and fulfilling life. A good therapeutic relationship between the client and the therapist is essential, because the client needs to feel safe and comfortable to talk to their counsellor. The counsellor’s role is not to advise their client what to do, but to create a safe, confidential and non-judgmental environment in which the client and the counsellor can together explore and discover the client’s own internal strength, experience, and knowledge, that can help them to improve their lives.
The idea of counselling and therapy is centered on the belief that every individual already has a huge potential and arsenal of resources to help themselves on the way to healing and leading a satisfying life, but sometimes access to these resources is somehow blurry or obscured or impossible to access. The counsellor’s role is to help the client find it.
There are several theoretical approaches that therapists may use in their work with clients, depending on their individual circumstances and needs. I am an integrative therapist, which means that I can adjust my way of working to the needs of individual clients. For example, a client suffering from anxiety may want to work on improving their day to day functioning, and that type of work may include some practical exercises concentrating on recognizing and strengthening their coping techniques. Another client may need help understanding why they feel angry and frustrated all the time, and a client experiencing bereavement may need some space to openly grieve and, in the long term, find a safe space for grief and pain in their heart, that will enable them to continue living their life in peace.
